New Regulations for Windows and Patio Doors Near Pools

Those located less than 3 meters away (on the exterior side) must be designed to prevent the passage of a spherical object larger than 10 cm in diameter when opened. Additionally, windows must be a certain distance from the pool — they must be more than 1 meter from the pool or the enclosure. Otherwise, the same opening restriction applies.

For patio doors, the regulation mainly addresses locking mechanisms. A patio door that provides access to a pool must have the same features as a safety gate. It must close and lock automatically. Moreover, the locking device (on the interior side) must be installed at a height of at least 1.5 meters to limit access for children.

Why Was This Regulation Updated?

The Quebec government decided to strengthen residential pool safety regulations to reduce the risk of drowning among young children. These new requirements apply to all pools, whether installed before or after November 1, 2010. Therefore, homeowners who were previously exempt must comply with the new rules by September 30, 2025.
